Growth Form: Perennial ± succulent herbs.

Stems: Stems twining, much branched.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ± cordate to ovate. Margins undulate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence of axillary spikes or panicles. bracts 2, fused into 2-lipped cup joined to calyx. Flowers bisexual (perfect), sessile. Calyx urn-shaped or ± open, lobed. Stamens 5, opposite the petals; anthers dithecal. Stamens filament attached near apex of calyx tube. Ovary superior, 1-celled, 3-carpellate; ovule 1, basal, ovoid; styles 3 or deeply 3-lobed (or absent); stigmas linear.

Fruit: Fruit a utricle; membranous; 1–sided; enclosed in fleshy; colored calyx. Seeds 1 per fruit; globose; true endosperm absent.
